There's a thrill, up on the hill, let's go, let's go, let's go....
Hey y'all. This is a great show on a great day at Dave's CC Club. A benefit for V89 FSU radio and a beautiful day outside under the oaks. Good mix, good recording, lots of different players and some special moments. I think Dave had recently opened the club so the show was kinda for his benefit too. Charles and the Boys did many shows there in the beginning as Dave got going. I introduced the 5 dollar don't holler cover and we got to be doing pretty good - until Dave saw the dollars and changed to a flat rate for the bands :( But by then he was able to book bigger acts and he and Elizabeth did a lot to bring the blues to Tallahassee.
Some of the highlights include Charles coming out for his second set, fired up after filling his belly with ribs and talking with everyone. Stage power goes out during Lifting Me Higher and Charles doesn't miss a beat shouting out his song. Maestro Carlos Barrientos tears it up; and Matt Reshad, with that sweet guitar, was a student of Charles but played out with him often during his time at FSU. If anyone recognizes any of the other players, please add in a review or email me and I'll update it -- swcopeland at gmail com
The flyer is for a show 2 weeks later, again outside under the oaks with the club behind the stage. I think this was the show where the cops came after neighbors complained during Work For Higher. Seems like the sound was booming up the hill and crashing down off in the distance. The deputy came right at me at the board, pointed, and said YOU WILL TURN IT DOWN! Yes sir -- but you might want to talk to that bass player cause he ain't going thru the board. I don't think there were any other recordings at Daves. I know I didn't record inside because of the tough sound conditions given the hard cinder block walls, flat ceiling and concrete floor.
January 2009 -- As Martin Luther King Jr Day approaches, I guess I should mention the celebrations Dave put on and his reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. Enjoy! SCopeland
